Life in the desert is all about preserving water any way possible, and nearly a dozen Phoenix-area breweries will compete to see who can make the best beer from reclaimed wastewater.

As part of the AZ Pure Water Brew Challenge, 11 local breweries will use the recycled sewage water , according to KSAZ-TV. , AZfamily.com reported, and the water will be delivered from the City of Phoenix 23rd Avenue Wastewater Treatment Plant.

"," Jeff Prevatt, the Research and Innovation Leader with the Pima County Waste Water Department, told ABC 15 Arizona. "It's ultra-pure. It's the purest water you'll encounter."

By the time the wastewater reaches the breweries, it will have gone through five stages of filtration to make it pure again, AZfamily.com also said. It has been pumped through an elaborate filtration system in a $250,000 tractor-trailer that was outfitted with all the technology needed to turn wastewater into clean, drinkable water, ABC 15 Arizona said.

The competition is an effort to raise awareness that it's possible to recycle some of the 800 million gallons of wastewater generated every day in metro Phoenix, according to AZfamily.com. And recycling much of that water, especially in a growing desert city, could be the key to future sustainability.

"We've done a great job of water planning in the state of Arizona, but in 5, 10, 15, 20 years, we may need to start looking at alternatives," Channah Rock, a water quality specialist at the University of Arizona, told KSAZ. "It's something you need to see for yourself and that's why they're taking the show on the road with their advanced water purification mobile lab so that everyone can come take a look and get educated."
