New SUVs and hybrid vehicles were the focal point of the 2013 New York International Auto Show, North America's largest auto show, which opened Friday.
Subaru unveiled its first pairing of hybrid power and all-wheel-drive in its 2014 XV Crosstrek Hybrid, expected to go on sale in October 2013 as a 2014 model, according to Forbes. The Japanese brand's long-awaited gas-electric hybrid gets better gas mileage than the conventional Crosstrek and has stop-start technology that shuts down the engine at red lights to save fuel. Subaru said the hybrid retains the gas model’s 8.7 inches of ground clearance so its outdoorsy fans can still take it on trails.
Land Rover's Range Rover Sport also made its world debut in New York. Designed as an amalgamation of the compact Evoque crossover and the full-size Range Rover, the Sport draws design cues from both, according to the Los Angeles Times. It features a fully independent, double wishbone suspension for better handling, road-holding and grip, which keep its 5.0-litre, 510PS, supercharged V8 engine in check.
Other unveilings taking the spotlight at the 113th anniversary of the auto show include Cadillac's 2014 CTS, featuring a twin-turbo V-6 engine, and Nissan's and Infiniti's hybrid versions of their SUVs, Pathfinder Hybrid and the QX60 Hybrid. Acura also raised the velvet curtain on its new-generation MDX.
