The U.S. National Park Service is turning 98 years old today. To celebrate, all park entrance fees (including commercial tour fees and transportation entrance fees) have been waived for the day at the 133 parks that currently charge for admission.

The park system stretches across 84 million acres, covering 401 sites including national monuments, battlefields, military parks, lakeshores, seashores and rivers. In 2013, the park system, which includes national monuments and historic sites, drew 273.6 million visitors, according to The Telegraph.
“America’s national parks preserve the story of this nation and protect our special places,” Neil Mulholland, the National Park Foundation President and CEO, told weather.com in April.

So, if you’re looking for something to do today, be sure to head to one of these special places. With 401 sites, your nearest park is closer than you think and every state has at least one national park for you to include. Longtime favorites include the Grand Canyon and the hot springs at Yellowstone. Nature lovers can head to Sequoia National Park and admire the largest living single-stem tree in the world, which stands 275-feet tall, while Colorado offers excellent stargazing at the Great Sand Dunes National Park.
