Here’s a reason dogs are awesome: Two family dogs didn’t leave a 2-year-old girl’s side after she walked away from her home in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. State police said the toddler was found miles away from her home using one of the dogs as a pillow.

"She laid down and used one of the dogs as a pillow, and the other dog laid right next to her and kept her safe," Lt. Mark Giannunzio said Thursday. "It's a really remarkable story."

In an interview with , mom Brooke Chase said that her daughter Thea wandered away from the home in Faithorn, Michigan, just east of the Wisconsin border, around 8 p.m. on Wednesday. The Chase family and friends searched the surrounding wooded area for about 15 minutes for her toddler and the dogs before calling in help from Michigan State Police.

State troopers used drones and police dogs in the search while citizens and local police from both Michigan and Wisconsin joined in.

Thea and her two canine companions were found by a citizen on an ATV at around midnight about 3 miles from her home.

Despite temperatures that were in the mid-50s, Giannunzio said the girl was checked by medical staff and appeared to be in good health.

"I am just still in such shock," Chase told WJMN, "I was in such a fog and such a shock that she was just literally gone, in like, a split second."
