Incredible Nebula Looks Strangely Familiar

What does this cloud look like to you? (Jay Albert/capeannimages )

Terry Robinson was photographing a cosmic nebula near the constellation Cariana from his home in Melbourne, Australia when he captured something strikingly familiar in the interstellar cloud — The Statue of Liberty.

Using a 10-year-old telescope he built himself, Robinson captured over 28 exposures at 1,800 seconds each to create the incredible image. When the photo was finally ready, Robinson couldn't help but notice that part of the nebula shared an amazing likeness with the iconic New York landmark.

"When I started to get some data, I was pleased with the resulting image. It was quite a striking and different and had all the qualities that I love with black and white photography," he told Caters News Agency. "The combination of both the dark and defined vanes mixing with the equally interesting little vanes and textures. The universe is truly awesome. I love this stuff, and the only way I can travel the cosmos is through the images we capture."

"The Statue of Liberty image was taken through a narrowband filter. The filter I used is perhaps the most popular of the narrowband filters used by astrophotographers," he added.
