Ice Storm Strikes Tornado-Ravaged Areas of Tennessee, Kentucky, Including Mayfield

A damaging ice storm is underway in parts of Kentucky and Tennessee still recovering from a destructive and deadly December tornado outbreak.

Named Winter Storm Landon by The Weather Channel, this widespread storm is leaving a wintry mess from New Mexico to Maine through Friday.

While snow and sleet accumulations could make travel hazardous, the bigger concern is ice in areas ravaged by December's tornadoes.

From parts of eastern Arkansas into western Tennessee, the Bootheel of Missouri into western and northern Kentucky, ice accumulations won't just make roads dangerous – they also could down numerous trees and lead to widespread power outages that could last at least several hours.

As of Thursday afternoon, had accumulated in trees near Benton, Kentucky. Trees were downed in in Princeton, Kentucky, from the weight of accumulated ice and the entire town of Dawson Springs was without power.

Temperatures may struggle to get much above freezing in this ice storm zone Friday and Saturday. However, a slow warmup is expected by Sunday – which should accelerate the melting of ice and snow.

However, nighttime temperatures will remain colder than average through early next week.

This wouldn't be the first damaging storm the region has dealt with this winter.

Less than two months ago, a historic December tornado outbreak spawned , the majority of which were in Missouri, southern Illinois, northeastern Arkansas, Kentucky and Tennessee.

These reports (red dots) may not capture all tornadoes that were confirmed from the Dec. 10, 2021 outbreak. Areas in purple were under ice storm warnings from the National Weather Service for Winter Storm Landon as of Feb. 3, 2022.

Two of those tornadoes were rated , including Kentucky's longest-track tornado, a 166-mile-long twister that devastated Mayfield, Kentucky.

The tornadoes claimed at least 87 lives, according to the , the deadliest December tornado outbreak . Damage was estimated at $3.9 billion.

In mid-January, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear signed legislation providing for schools and residents left homeless from the tornadoes. Last week, the to residents of Mayfield and surrounding areas, WLKY-TV reported.

were declared major disaster areas by President Joe Biden after the outbreak, and are eligible for federal assistance from FEMA.

This wouldn't be the first time this area has endured multiple destructive storms in just a few months' time.

In September 2008, the remnants of Hurricane Ike barreled through the Ohio Valley with widespread damaging winds. Ike knocked out power to 600,000 in Kentucky, the state's most widespread power outage on record.

That record only lasted about four months.

A left 609,000 Kentucky homes and businesses without power, some for up to 10 days. Property damage was widespread from fallen trees.
