It seemed like a nice enough day to take the yacht out — until a drawbridge malfunctioned and stopped the massive boat in its tracks.
A major mishap occured in Florida on the Broad Causeway as the drawbridge unexpectedly came down on a passing mega yacht.
It was a less-than-glamorous moment for a yacht named “The Rockstar.” The yacht, which cost a little more than a quarter million dollars to charter for just a week, is being checked out by investigators from the U.S. coast guard and the FWC before it can continue on to Miami.
The Broad Causeway, connecting North Miami with Bay Harbor Islands and Bal Harbor, is undergoing tests to make sure the locking mechanism really does work. Bay Harbor’s Assistant Town Manager, J.C. Jimenez, said that “The Rockstar” was under tow when the tow company requested the bridge tender raise both sides, so it could pass on its way to Miami from Fort Lauderdale. As it went through, the east side of the drawbridge suddenly started to slip and came crashing down on the yacht, taking out part of the yacht's roof and doing tens of thousands of dollars in damage.
Incidentally, the Broad Causeway, which is about sixty years old, is about to undergo a $13 million rehab project, which includes replacing parts of the drawbridge mechanism because of past electrical problems. Right now the city has engineers evaluating the Causeway bridge and what to do next. No doubt they are also talking to the town attorney.
