Glorious as they may be, many of our world's landmarks are made even more beautiful by the landscapes that surround them.

There's the green grass that surrounds Stonehenge. The perfectly manicured trees in front of the Eiffel Tower. The pristine blue waters of Canada's Banff National Park. But what if drought took all of that vegetation and water away from our planet's most striking landmarks?

Graphic designer Joel Krebs is giving a glimpse into the world of drought and how it would affect the way we look at 11 of our world's landmarks. In the images above, you can see before-and-after comparisons of all 11 landmarks, giving us a shocking look at a possible future of widespread drought.

Krebs told Buzzfeed he first got the idea to remove landmarks from an image to show what it would look like without that identifiable object. This inspired him to project other landmarks onto a drought-ridden landscape to tell a bigger story.

“I thought about other landmarks and what they may look like with the same approach," Krebs told Buzzfeed. "Showing the before and after creates a contrast and gives a unique perspective on some of the most famous locations on the planet.”
