Heavy snowfall and gusty winds hit the Dakotas and Minnesota Monday morning, leading to some travel chaos and at least three deaths.
One person was killed in a crash Monday afternoon during whiteout conditions on Interstate 29, about 20 miles south of Fargo, the Associated Press reports.
Highway Patrol Capt. Bryan Niewind said a van and a truck were both traveling northbound in the right lane when another vehicle passed them, triggering whiteout conditions. When the truck and van slowed down, a semitrailer struck that van from behind, pushing it into the truck.
The unidentified driver of the van was killed in the incident.
A man was killed when he stopped to help at the scene of a crash near Madison, Wisconsin, Monday night, according to the AP.
Monona police said the man was struck by a suspected drunk driver when he stopped to assist a driver who had crashed around 7 p.m. on Highway 12 on New Year's Eve.
In Fond du Lac County, Rose Larson, 25, of Brandon, was killed Monday when her vehicle spun into the path of a car on state Highway 26 near Rosendale.

Throughout the day, authorities urged drivers to refrain from driving in the treacherous conditions.
The snow that ended early Monday afternoon forced the closure of the Rapid City Regional Airport in South Dakota. The airport reopened Tuesday morning.
