Need to Get Away?

It's the middle of January and we're in the heart of winter. Northern towns , and recent snowy scenes have been a common backdrop for millions. However, some towns haven't been dragged into the doldrums of winter. Check out our list of five cities that have seen warmer-than-average days in the coldest month of the year.

The mere mention of Phoenix conjures up images of a desert baking in triple-digit heat. Naturally, it's still one of the sunniest getaways in January.

"The best place to get away from the cold right now is Phoenix, Ariz.," said weather.com meteorologist . "Temperatures will be in the low 80s through Thursday with more record highs possible (record high of 81 set on Tuesday)."

For the weekend, however, highs will drop into the 60s -- still a warm afternoon for those dealing with brutally-cold wind chills, though!

The image of sunny, warm Miami could apply to any month of the year, but it's especially refreshing for those looking to thaw out in January.

"Temperatures will be typical of late-January with highs in the middle to upper 70s through the weekend and no threat of rainfall," said Dolce.

Unlike Phoenix, there's no threat of a cool-down, making it one of the most reliable warm-weather getaways of the winter months.

Along the coast of southeastern Texas, the town of Corpus Christi is a smaller town than Miami or Phoenix, but it can provide serious relief from frigid temperatures in the middle of winter.

Looking at temperatures in the upper 70s and possibly even into the lower 80s, Corpus Christi would be an ideal backdrop to thaw out and get some sun while blowing snow plagues parts of the North.

It was a very white Christmas for the capital of Arkansas -- they received nearly a foot of snow on Dec. 25, 2012! A month later, this is one of the warmest destinations for an escape in the United States, but it will take a little while longer before they reach "destination warmth" status.

When the jet stream reverses early next week, temperatures will rise to nearly 70 degrees by Monday and Tuesday, erasing any memory of that snowy Christmas Day of last month.

The winter months have been a roller coaster in the Southeast, bouncing from brief days of warmth to a chilly blast and back to warm weather again. Fortunately, a warm-up appears to be on the horizon, which would make Atlanta an appropriate getaway destination for those suffering through the cold. Highs in the 60s should return early next week.
