New York City is the U.S. city most vulnerable to coastal flooding, according to a new Climate Central report.New York City is also expected to be the most vulnerable city in 2050, projections showed.Nearly all of the 25 most vulnerable cities are located in Florida.

New York City isthe U.S. city most vulnerable to coastal flooding, and that's not projected to change by the middle of the century, according to new research released by Climate Central.

The report, released Wednesday, found the Big Apple remains the most vulnerable city in the country for coastal flooding five years after Superstorm Sandy decimated the coastline. The report lists Miami as the second-most-vulnerable U.S. city, and aside from New York City, every city in the top 10 is located in Florida.

The study looked at all U.S. cities with populations above 20,000, and the results used three metrics: population within the 100-year FEMA floodplain, population within that floodplain combined with sea level rise projections for 2050 and the total high social vulnerability population in the same locations as the second metric.

When the projections for 2050 were calculated, the top 10 remained virtually the same, but most of the cities were shuffled up or down. All except New York City, which is still roughly twice as vulnerable to coastal floodingas the second-place city.

According to projections, an additional 181,000 people are expected to live on at-risk lands in New York City by 2050.

These are the 25 U.S. cities expected to be most vulnerable to coastal flooding in 2050.

Thirty-three years from now, Climate Central's projections expect Boston, Virginia Beach and Norfolk, Virginia, to enter the top 25, and on both lists, all 25 cities are located along the East or Gulf coasts – another sign that the impacts of climate change will not affect the entire planet evenly.

The report also studied cities with the highest social vulnerability by 2050. On this list, the cities that had the fewest resources to prepare and respond to environmental hazards were ranked by using 29 different socioeconomic variables, according to the study.

New York City wasn't the highest-ranked city on this list; it ranked second-highest. Hialeah, Florida, which ranked in the top-10 of both previous lists, finished No. 1, while cities like Philadelphia, Houston and Baltimore all got bad ratings for social vulnerability.
