When photographer Alex Bradbury walked over a glacier to reach a remote location in Southern Iceland he didn’t expect to discover a rarely-seen natural phenomenon hidden 30 feet under solid ice — crystal-clear caverns with a waterfall crashing through them.

“The trek to reach the cave was very tiring and the cave itself freezing cold, but that was instantly forgotten when I reached the hidden rooms of ice,” Bradbury told Caters News Agency.

The British photographer hiked to the edge of Vatnajokull National Park, one of the largest parks in Europe, and walked over a glacier for over mile to reach the caverns.

The ice in the caverns appears to be blue in color due to the lack of air in the ice. The airless blocks of ice absorb all visible light, except for the blue fraction, which is then visible to the naked eye.

“The light shining through the ice made the caves seem incredibly magical and surreal,” Bradbury said. “I felt incredibly privileged to witness a natural phenomenon almost untouched by humanity.”

Vatnajokulll National Park covers 11 percent of Iceland for a total of 4,633 square miles, according to Iceland’s Tourism board.

The slideshow above features Bradbury’s photo from his expedition under solid ice inside the caverns.
