Photographer Michael Marten traveled to various parts of the British coast and photographed identical views at high tide and low tide several hours apart to document the drastic changes in water levels. The photos are collected in his series, “Sea Change.”

Since 2003 Marten visited several different spots on the English coast, beaches filled with tourists on vacation, harbors and industrial estuaries.

Marten told Lens Culture that he wanted his landscape photography to focus on how nature affects the planet, instead of how humans have changed the environment.

“The tides are one of these great natural cycles,” Marten wrote on the site. “I hope these photographs will stimulate people’s awareness of natural change, of landscape as dynamic process rather than static image.”

Marten photographed identical shots six to 18 hours apart, so viewers could see the visual differences from high to low tide.

The London-born photographer’s study of tides can be seen in his book “Sea Change: A Tidal Journey Around Britain,” which features 53 diptychs.
