Amazing Supernova Images That Remind Us How Beautiful The Universe Really Is
Nov 15, 2024 7:00 AM

To celebrate the birthday of the Chandra X-ray Observatory earlier this week, NASA has released a new set of stunning supernova images for everyone to ogle.

The first pair — Tycho and G292.0 — trace out the expanding debris and shockwaves of supernova remnants. The second pair, known as The Crab Neubla and 3C58, highlight the clouds of high-energy particles produced by pulsars.

According to NASA, Chandra has "helped revolutionize our understanding of the universe," since it was first launched into space on July 23, 1999.

The space telescope orbits about 86,500 miles above the Earth, which is more than a third of the way to the moon, Gizmag report. This helps it avoid being affected by the Earth's shadow when making observations. Unlike the Hubble Space Telescope, which captures visible light wavelengths, Chandra has been designed to capture X-ray wavelengths, granting us a glimpse into the "invisible" realms of outer space.
