5 Cities With Wild Temperatures Swings to Start 2014

Rapid Weather Changes to Start 2014

For many cities in the East, rapidly changing temperatures have been a common theme during the start of 2014. The latest temperature swing will arrive this weekend with many cities climbing 10 to 20 degrees above average.

Starting with Boston below, let's take a look at a few of the rapid changes some cities have dealt with since Jan. 1.

Boston

Beantown has seen it all from heavy snow and frigid temperatures at the start of the month, to highs 20 degrees above average a few days later, and a return to frigid conditions shortly thereafter.

(Average High: 36 degrees | Average Low: 22 degrees)

Frigid (Jan 2, 3, 4): Low temperature of just 2 degrees on Jan. 2, 3, and 4. also left behind 15.1 inches of snow on Jan. 2-3.Mild (Jan. 6):High of 56 degrees at about 2:30 p.m. on Jan. 6. A 54-degree rise from the morning of Jan. 4Frigid (Jan 7, 8): Temperature of 12 degrees about 18-hours later onJan. 7 at 8:00 a.m. (total drop of 44 degrees). This was followed by a low of 7 degrees on the morning of Jan. 8.Mild Forecast (Jan. 11): Highs in the 50s expected this weekend, though accompanied by rain. Temperatures remain above average into early next week.

Philadelphia

Nine inches of snow from in Philadelphia melted in dramatic fashion thanks to a massive temperature shift.

(Average High:40 degrees |Average Low:26 degrees)

Cold (Jan 2, 3, 4):Nine inches of snow Jan 2-3 was followed up by a low temperature of 8 degrees on the morning of Jan. 4.Warm (Jan. 6):A couple mornings later, those who woke up early experienced a morning temperature of 60 degrees at 6:17 a.m on Jan. 6 (52-degree rise from the morning of Jan. 4).Cold (Jan. 7):Less than 24 hours later, temperatures were in the single digits, bottoming out at a daily record low of 4 degrees early on the morning of Jan. 7 (56-degree drop).Mild Forecast (Jan. 11):High in the upper50s to low 60s expected Saturday along with widespread rain. Temperatures remain above average into early next week.

Orlando

If you've been spending time on vacation at the theme parks in Orlando, you've probably been in a state of wardrobe confusion. Take a look at these up and down high temperatures.

(Average High: 71 degrees | Average Low: 49 degrees)

Warm (Jan. 2):83 degrees.Cool (Jan. 3): 62 degrees.Warm (Jan. 5):82 degrees.Cold (Jan. 7): High of 49 degrees after a morning low just above freezing.Warm Forecast (Jan. 10-11): Highs rising into the 80sthrough Saturday.

Richmond, Va.

Richmond, Va. could see a high of near 70 degrees just four days after waking up to a low of 10 degrees. Check out the temperature roller coaster they've been riding.

(Average High: 47 degrees | Average Low: 28 degrees)

Cold (Jan. 3): High of 35 degrees.Cold (Jan. 4): Low of 16 degreesMild (Jan. 5-6): Temperature rose to 61 degrees at 10:47 p.m. on Jan. 5 and then topped out at 63 degrees the next morning at 6:23 a.m. Both readings were the high temperatures for each dayCold (Jan. 7): Morning low temperature of 10 degrees on Jan. 7 just over 24-hours after the high of 63 degrees on Jan. 6 (total drop of 53 degrees).Warm Forecast (Jan. 11): High temperature near 70 degrees possible on Saturday with widespread rain. Cooler early next week, but still above average.

Savannah, Ga.

Another city where highs in the 70s are possible this weekend after a low in the teens is Savannah, Ga.

(Average High: 60 degrees | Average Low: 38 degrees)

Cold (Jan. 3): High of 45 degrees.Warm (Jan. 5): High of 61 degrees.Warm to Cold (Jan. 6): Morning high of 65 degrees was followed by temperatures in the 20s by evening.Cold (Jan. 7): Just over 24-hours after the 65-degree reading, it was 19 degrees.Warm Forecast (Jan. 10-11): Highs rising into the 70s throughSaturday. Staying mild into early next week.
