Keurigusers beware: Your beloved K-Cups may be harming the environment.

According to Mother Jones, only 5 percent of the cups produced by Keurig Green Mountain, which is the most popular brand, are made of recyclable plastic. The other 95 percent are made of #7 composite plastic, which isn't recyclable in most of the U.S., the website explains.

As for the 5 percent that is recyclable, theNatural Resources Defense Council saysthe cups' size decreases the chanceof the cups even going through with the recycling process.

On top of that, thosemini coffee containers are made of three parts: the plastic cup, the aluminum foil that keeps the coffee fresh and a separate filter inside the container. As Cindy Luppi with Clean Water Action told CBS Boston,"It's hard to recycle because of the multiple materials."

Keurig is aware the K-Cups are getting a bad name in environmental circles. The company's 2013 Sustainability Report outlines how it's ambitiously working toward 2020 sustainability targets. Some of the steps include evaluating the plastic used in the cups, exploring biodegradable and compostable packaging options and also creating easier ways for consumers to prepare pods for recycling.

So far, Keurig has already implemented a "Grounds to Grow On" program, which allows companies in the U.S. using commercial Keurig machines to collect and return used K-Cup packs to the company's disposal partner. The packs will be composted and go through energy-from-waste processing. Keurig is also working toward their goal by offering the Vue pack, a collection of cups made from recyclable polypropylene#5 plastic and the My K-Cup accessory, which has a reusable filter.
