Winter Storm Juno in Philadelphia: Schools Close Early, Hundreds of Flights Canceled as City Braces for Snowstorm

The City of Brotherly Love is about to get a lot snowier.

With about a half-foot of snow expected to fall in the Philadelphia area, officials and crews are working to make final preparations for Winter Storm Juno. In western and central Pennsylvania, schools were closed Monday following Juno's initial burst into the Keystone State.

And in southern New Jersey, where snow totals were expected to be smaller than in northern parts of the state, authorities were still preparing for an event that could leave up to a foot of new snow in widespread areas.

Here's the latest on how each area is preparing for Juno.

Philadelphia

Schools will be closing early Monday as Juno closes in on the city, according to The Associated Press. Public and Catholic schools will be dismissed at noon.

Philadelphia International Airport is also feeling the effects of Juno's arrival. Monday, according to the flight-tracking website FlightAware, and more than 100 have been canceled Tuesday.

As crews worked to pretreat roadways Monday morning, , northwest of Philadelphia, according to NBC Philadelphia. The person was treated at the scene for minor injuries after the incident occurred at about 6:20 a.m. local time, the report added.

Pennsylvania

Elsewhere in Pennsylvania, school openings were delayed Monday morning in western and central parts of the state, The AP said. As much as 7 inches of snow had fallen by Monday morning in western Pennsylvania, with areas near Sandy Lake reporting the biggest snowfall from Juno.

in several central Pennsylvania municipalities, according to Fox43.com. These declarations prevent cars from parking on the side of roads, allowing snow plows to easier clear the streets, the report added.

More than three dozen flights have been canceled at Pittsburgh International Airport as of 8 a.m. Monday morning, according to FlightAware.
