Winter Storm Helena Kills 6; Brings New York City's First Snow of 2017

New York City and Long Island began to report snow from Winter Storm Helena on Saturday.2,300 city salt trucks and plows were dispatched to help clear the wintry mess.At least six people have died as a result of the storm.

Winter Storm Helena continued to cause havoc in the northeast on Sunday.

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper says a car skidded off an icy interstate, killing one person.

The death Sunday morning in Montgomery County south of Asheboro is the first reported death from this weekend's winter storm in the state.

The winter storm has killed at least six people in the West and South and has brought 5.1 inches of snow to New York City, with a 7.5 inch high reported at Kennedy Airport in Queens.

Motoristsin Virginia faced a toll hike of $30 on Interstate 495 during the height of the storm. The increase was blamed on Virginia Department of Transportation salt trucks, reports the AP.

Mayor Bill de Blasio tweeted a thank-you note to the New York City Department of Sanitation for their hard work clearing roadways through the night as the storm tapered off.
