Nothing captures the dramatic beauty of Mother Nature than extreme weather images—from incredible storms to frozen landscapes. , a community of photographers from around the world, recently announced the winners of the , which featured photos capturing incredible (and sometimes, scary) forces of nature. The competition was judged by the community and by an expert judge, Hank Schyma.
The winning photo by Sandi Bertoncelj of skiiers in the Karavanke Alps in Slovenia was called "epic, hardcore and the epitome of extreme," by judge Schyma, who is also a storm chaser. "Expert composition, subject matter and photography mastery with Mother Nature biting down," he said.
Photographer Susan Dobbswaited "months for the right conditions to photograph a giant wave" in Porthcawl, Bridgend in Wales. "I had to get close, my camera and myself took a soaking but well worth the effort," she said. The effort won her fourth place in Expert Choice. "I'm glad the photographer waited months for the right conditions and stood out in the cold, biting wind to bring us this image," Schyma said. "There is something about the upward sloping of this wave that is terrifying... "
Pal Szilagyi Palko's image of a car, frozen and covered in snow after a snowstorm, also earned a rave review from the expert judge. "It shows us when dealing with fantastic weather, a simple snap shot gets it done," said Schyma. "In situations like this, Mother Nature does all the work and the photographer simply documents it."
