Want To Live Completely Alone? This Map Will Show You Where To Go

As our population continues to swell, you might be looking for a place to get away for a little peace and quiet, or you might want to move to an unpopulated area permanently.

Nik Freeman's map project, called "," might be your answer.

The maps below were a product of Freeman's research. Using 2010 Census data, he created a stunning map that shows every piece of America where the population was reported zero. Nearly 5 million Census blocks were found with no population.

And if you're really looking to experience the best or worst of weather, there's plenty of unpopulated land in Hawaii and Alaska, too:

"This map was actually an accidental discovery. I was working with U.S. Census Block data for another project," Freeman said in an email. "To save some resources in my database, I planned to delete the unpopulated blocks. When it turned out I was about to delete nearly half the records, I had to see what it all looked like on a map. From there, I started exploring the geography of unpopulated places, fascinated at the patterns revealed."

Freeman also said that he was surprised to find some of these unpopulated blocks of land were actually inside urban areas.

"The revelation that cities, despite their populations, often have large stretches of uninhabited land was certainly perspective-shifting," he added.
