Step 1: Install Your New Door (Optional)

Follow the manufacturer's instructions that come with the door. If you don't have experience installing a door, turn to a professional for help ensure a safe installation.

Step 2: Prep the Surface

Before applying any paint to your door, make sure you're working with a clean surface. Use some cleaning solvent and a wash cloth or paper towel to thoroughly cleanse the door.

Step 3: Replace and Add New Caulk

Caulk the door and add insulation if it's necessary. The last thing before tackling the door itself is to paint (or re-paint) the trim around the door to make sure it's fresh and clean-looking.

Step 4: Tape and Paint

Once the door has been cleaned, use painter's tape to section off the parts of your door you'd like to paint and to create clean lines. If your door has a window on it, tape inside the window to keep the lines crisp.

When painting, use long, even strokes for a nice finish. Use two coats of exterior paint.

Step 5: Replace the Light

If you want to brighten your door, replace the existing light next to your door with a new one. When dealing with electrical, get help from a professional to make sure the installation is done safely.

Step 6: Apply the Stencil

Before setting the stencil on your door, make sure you have a nice even line. Use painter's tape (and a level if you're a true perfectionist!) to create a straight line to work with. Once you've put your stencil on the door, use a foam brush and some exterior paint in a color that will complement the new coat of paint on your door. Use light strokes to keep the paint from seeping under the stencil and ruining the design. When the paint dries, remove the stencil.
