TripAdvisor, the travel planning and booking site, announced the winners of its 2016 Traveler’s Choice Awards for the best global destinations. London was ranked in first place.

Renown for its historical buildings and rich culture, London jumped five spots in TripAdvisor’s rankings from last year. Travelers praised the city for wealth of experiences it offers, from art museums to multicultural restaurants to lively pubs.

Also moving up in the rankings this year was Istanbul, which came in second place. Located at the bridge of Europe and Asian, this city is full of stunning mosques and Byzantine cathedrals and offers breathtaking views of the Bosphorus Strait.

Following in third place was Morocco’s Marrakech, famous for its spice markets and ornate mosques, in fourth place was Paris, and in fifth was Siem Reap in Cambodia.

The Traveler’s Choice Awards list is based on the quantity and quality of user reviews and ratings of a destination’s hotels, restaurants, and attractions over a 12-month period. The travel site also lists the average nightly rate of booking a hotel at each destination, allowing travelers to know how much they should expect to pay at each place.

TripAdvisor also ranked the Top 10 U.S. Destinations (New York City came in first place). Earlier this year, they also released their Traveler’s Choice Awards for Best Beaches of the World and Grace Bay topped the list.
