Yes, it really is as cold as it looks in one of the coldest cities on the planet.

Winters in Yakutsk are brutal—temperatures in this remote city in eastern Siberia can fall below minus 50 F. What does that really feel like? The air here is cold enough to in your nostrils. And, of course, frostbite is always a constant danger in this frozen landscape of seemingly never-ending snow and ice.

Despite the subzero conditions, freelance photographer Max Avdeev has traveled to this city six times. “I love it, how people survive, develop economy and culture,” he told weather.com. “I love people living in remote places in harsh environments.”

The climate in Yakutsk is so harsh that Avdeev considers anything around minus 20 F warm. Still, his fascination with the Yakutsk lifestyle pushes him to go around the city photographing the people and the culture.
