As fans wait in anticipation for the premiere of the Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the seventh installment in the much-beloved Star Wars film series, the International Ice Sculpture Festival inLiège, Belgium is fueling the excitement with icy, frozen recreations of Star Wars characters, including Yoda, Darth Vader, R2-D2, and even, stormtroopers.
The festival features 61 Star Wars ice sculptures, created by a group of 30 professional artists from 12 different countries. The sculpture range from 6 to 19 feet in height,are on display in a massive ecologically where the temperature is a constant 21 degrees Fahrenheit, according to The Telegraph. Some 500 tons of ice were reportedly used to create the display, which fans are calling "out of this world."
According to Alex Girard, artistic director of the Star Wars Ice Sculpture Festival, not all the carvers are "fanatics" of the franchise, but all have given careful thought and attention to the form and design of the sculptures. "We have to be really precise," he said. "The form, the design of the helmets of the troopers and all of those elements had to be studied in detail."
The event opened on November 14 and runs through January 31, 2016. The display is located near the train station of Liège. Visitors are advised to wear warm clothing and gloves because of the controlled temperature inside the hall.
