Stunning Images of Ice Diver Swimming in Antarctic Waters
Jan 17, 2024 3:40 PM

French photographer and freediver Alexandre Voyer has captured the stunning underwater life of Antarctica before, photographing a and up close. But on a recent trip to the bone-chilling, turquoise waters of Antarctica, where temperatures are 32 degrees F, the region's stunning ice caps and glaciers take the spotlight as the diver swims past the frozen wonders.

Voyer, 37, and his diving partner, Gilles Rigaud, actually planned to dive for almost two hours, but were forced to jump out of the water sooner when the icy temperatures became too much to cope with.

"It was so cold that we had to put warm water inside our wetsuits before getting in the water, and we had to eat a lot too, to make sure we had enough energy," Voyer said. "'We would have loved to have stayed longer, playing with the seals and whales in the water, but when we couldn't feel our fingers and toes any more, we realized we had to get out."

To prepare for the icy swim, Voyer said he trained by swimming in the sea and the pools in Paris, and running.
