Snow-Loving Boston Officially 'Breaks Up' With Winter
Snow-Loving Boston Officially 'Breaks Up' With Winter
Jan 17, 2024 3:31 PM

Like a living Taylor Swift song, Boston residents want out of their relationship with winter.

Channeling the thoughts of an entire city, Boston.com writer Charlotte Wilder to the relentless snowfall that has frequently shut down transportation, schools and businesses over the past few weeks.

"At this point, I’m just feeling ... well, smothered. You won’t leave me alone," she said in the note.

Wilder told weather.com that she was asked to write an open letter to the piles of snow lining Boston's streets and opted to compare it to a relationship gone sour. Considering she was speaking on behalf of a city that traditionally welcomes snow with open arms, you can imagine how fed up Boston has gotten from weeks of the wintry onslaught.

"There's just nothing we can do," she said. "It's so ridiculous and completely unimaginable, but it's happening."

It wasn't long before the city's residents began sharing the breakup note on social media, and Wilder's letter quickly became the talk of a frozen town. Wilder said she received many emails expressing gratitude for writing exactly what so many Bostonians were thinking, and for allowing them to laugh during an event that hasn't been all that funny.

Snow totals have ballooned so much in 2015 in the Boston area that they're now comparing snowfall accumulations to the height of the city's famous sports stars.

Boston is about 30 inches shy of the city's snowiest season on record, and they'll probably get closer to that mark when before the weekend is over.
