People have been posting pictures of themselves on the Internet ever since the days of dialup modems. But only recently did the term "selfie" catch on for these digital self-portraits. The Oxford English Dictionary even made "selfie" its "word of the year" for 2013.

Now, with more than half the U.S. covered in snow, we think it's time to introduce a special kind of selfie – the "snowfie."

What's a snowfie? Pretty simple. It's a photo you take of yourself in or around snow. It can be falling snow, snow in the background, a snowman, or a snowball in your (free) hand. As long as it's a selfie and there's snow in it, it's a snowfie. (But if someone else is taking a photo of you, or you're taking a photo of someone else, it's not a selfie and definitely not a snowfie!)

We asked The Weather Channel Facebook fans and Twitter followers to send us snowfies on Dec. 15, as wound down over the Northeast.

We got responses not just from Electra's path, but from all over the country and even halfway around the world. And not just from teenagers, but people of all ages and backgrounds. Check out the snowfies above – and send us yours!
