'Puddlegrams' Show Stunning Views of Copenhagen Streets (PHOTOS)

Morten Nordstrom calls his photos 'puddlegrams.' His photos depict cityscapes in Copenhagen and throughout Europe in the reflections of puddles on the ground. The tall building in the background is one of Denmark's most famous buildings, The Round Tower, built in the late 1630s. (Morten Nordstrom)

Morten Nordstrom doesn’t dread rainy days like a lot of people. Rather, he looks forward to them. The Copenhagen native uses the weather in a unique way to create beautiful cityscapes of his hometown and cities throughout Europe. He photographs the city streets in puddles, creating upside down images of Denmark’s capital. He has coined these snapshots “puddlegrams.”

“The weather plays a big role in my photos. I'm not only dependent on light, but a much more unique weather condition, since I use puddles as reflective elements,” Nordstrom said. Therefore, Nordstrom’s photos rely on the rain. However, he says that raindrops and wind can destroy a clear reflection, so the weather must be fairly still.

“Optimal conditions for shooting puddlegrams is right after rainy weather, on [days that are] not too windy,” he explained. “That can be problematic in some places, but fortunately for me, that isn't the case in Denmark, where it's often raining.”

Nordstrom says that he looks for pedestrians and geometric lines to make an interesting photo.

Once, when Nordstrom was out shooting reflections in Copenhagen, Vinnie Who, a famous Danish indie-pop singer, just happened to stroll by. The photographer made sure to snap a good picture.

Nordstrom uses a Nikon Lumia 925 and uploads his photos to his account. He says that joining Instagram in 2012 inspired him to become more serious about his photography. He has created a new to showcase his photos.

“I like to shoot urban life and settings and to think outside the box. We all see the world from exactly the same perspective every day, so when I take a picture from a perspective that would require you to lay down on the road to see it, something brand new - and in my opinion quite beautiful - occurs.”
