What do Johnny Depp, David Copperfield, Richard Branson and Celine Dion have in common? They all own private islands. And you could join their ranks by owning an island of your very own.
Even though the most popular markets for secluded islands are tropical climates, these private strips of land are nestled in surprising locations across the country. If you're a fan of feeling the seasons change, there are private islands up for sale in the middle of a lake in New England. If your vision of ideal weather is the misty Pacific Northwest, there are islands available for you, too.
Private islands aren't just for the rich and famous. Dozens of private islands are on the market in the U.S., even more are for sale internationally, and some islands go for around $100,000. Word of warning: It requires a unique person to take ownership of a chunk of land in the middle of a body of water.
"It's basically a luxury niche that some people are interested in," said Patricia Rivers, director of operations for . "Either they want something that's pretty secluded, or someone that's ready to retire. Someone who's interested in trying something new and something a little more remote."
Although privacy is the major attraction for buyers, these secluded homes tend to be more eco-friendly than your typical house. Since home owners are generally cut off from main power grids, they rely on like solar panels for energy and geothermal heat pumps for temperature control.
Private Islands Online has been selling private pieces of paradise for 14 years. Currently it lists about 550 private islands for sale. On average, two private islands go on the market each week, Rivers said.
While many private islands come with an exorbitant price tag, there are some on the market that are not that far out of reach.

One man put his one-acre island off the coast of Brazil up for sale a few years ago for a mere $12,500. The island, which he named Isla Amor (Love Island), was a bad memory after a recent divorce.
Current prices range from $150,000 to $100 million, Rivers said.
"There are some that go up and sell quite quickly. Others go on the market and stay for years," Rivers said. "It all depends on locations. It's electricity, hydro (water service), all that... if that can be equally distributed on the island."
