For many, simply witnessing the Northern Lights can be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. PhotographerHallgrimur P. Helgason has had that pleasure several times, but perhaps no other time has measured up to this recent photo shoot.
"It’s really a thrill shooting the aurora, especially when they are so playful like they were that night," Helgason told .
After photographing for about an hour, Helgason noticed the aurora borealis taking the shape of a giant phoenix.
"I have to admit that I always get an adrenalin kick when the lights burst out like that — that particular shot was the top one of the night," he added.
