When architecture student Anatol Struna took an opportunity to volunteer on an architectural project in Tanzania, he fulfilled his dream to see—and photograph—the wonders of Africa.

While photography is just a hobby for Struna, he recently committed to take more photos. He uses the medium to stress the importance of self-discovery. “Traveling is important to find yourself, to know your limits, to meet new people with a different culture,” he told weather.com. “Discovering the outside world, you explore your inner world.”

Struna says he finds it hard to photograph nature and wildlife in his home country of Romania, and is often can only enjoy the outdoors when he’s away from the city or going on short weekend trips.

There is a sense of freedom that comes from being outdoors, he said. He visited a safari, which ended up being the most memorable moment from his trip to Tanzania. The country is known for Mount Kilimanjaro and the Serengeti, but it also has 16 national parks.

During the month that Struna was in Tanzania, he said the weather was very hot and only rained a few times. However, “the equatorial zone offered [him] the best sky [of his] life.”

As someone who prefers to shoot sunsets or sunrises, Struna said he frequently photographed while abroad. “I took photos all the time, because the nature and the country is too beautiful and very different [from] others I have seen,” he said.

He was especially in awe of the views above him. “My favorite photos are those with the sky,” he said. “Seeming so unreal, the sky makes me dream.”

In the future, Struna hopes to visit Chile, Iceland and Myanmar. “I’m waiting to have time and money for my future trips.”
