Officials in the Philippines say they crushed the world record for most trees planted in a single hour this weekend, putting 3.2 million seedlings in the ground, AFP reports.

Government officers are sure they’ve broken India’s record of 1.9 million trees planted in 2011, but concrete certification from Guinness World Records can take up to 18 weeks.

"Our official count is about 3.2 million trees in one hour. But we are still getting reports. We still have to prepare the packaging of documentary evidence (for Guinness)," regional environment director Marc Fragada told AFP.

According to Fragada, 160,000 came together to plant the trees in six areas on the Philippine island of Mindanao. The trees planted will help produce products like cacao, coffee and rubber.

"They were chosen by the planters in hopes that the local people will take good care of them because it will be part of their livelihood," Fragada said.

This massive achievement is part of the Department of Environment and Natural Resource’s goal to plant 8.8 million trees throughout the Philippines this year, the Gulf Today reports.

In 2013, public school students and teachers planted thousands of trees in support of “National Tree Planting Day,” according to the Manila Bulletin.

Education Secretary Armin Luistro launched the program in partnership with Environment Online, a global network for sustainability.

The Philippine archipelago’s forest cover has declined from 6.32 million acres in 2003 to 4.7 million acres in 2010 – a loss that pushed President Benigno Aquino to adopt the goal of planting 1.5 billion trees before his administration ends in 2016.
