Jan 17, 2024 3:41 PM

While Thursday saw near-perfect weather conditions for flying along the East Coast, passengers aboard a flight from Fort Lauderdale to New York City got the scare of their lives.

It happened aboard Delta Flight 2028, bound for New York City. After the plane took off from Fort Lauderdale, the crew reported smoke in the cockpit, , CBS News reported. Among the passengers on the plane was "60 Minutes" producer Katherine Davis.

"We could hear the beeping of the smoke alarm and it was pretty quickly –the cabin was filling up with smoke pretty quickly –so yeah, it was a little nerve-wracking," Davis told CBS News. "They told all of us to put our heads down in our laps because the air would be fresher."

Passenger Fabio Dias told NBC Newsas the plane landed in Charleston, but the crew was orderly and did not panic.

"It was this huge haze," he said. "[It] took me a couple seconds to realize what was really going on. There was no big noise, nothing beyond the sight of seeing smoke. It was kind of scary for a few minutes."

The flight was diverted to Charleston, South Carolina, after the cabin filled with smoke, and, according to CNN. Another New York-bound plane was able to carry the passengers to LaGuardia Airport.
