National Geographic Traveler Reveals Its 2016 Best of the World List (PHOTOS)

National Geographic Traveler magazine announced its annual , highlighting 20 must-see destinations to visit in 2016, as chosen by the magazine's editors.

“This year’s Best of the World list truly represents travel’s superlatives,” said National Geographic Traveler editor in chief Maggie Zackowitz in a statement.

Among the destinations featured in the 2016 Best of the World list is Burgundy's Côte d’Or in France, a revered wine region home to vineyards that were first planted by ancient Romans. National Geographic Traveler for the Beaune International Festival of Baroque Opera, or in the fall (October- November) to see the fall foliage and experience harvest festivals.

Also included are such wildlife destinations as , including the Big Five of the traditional African Safari; and the are known to gather on the island’s rocky beaches. Greenland, Bermuda, Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, Hokkaido in Japan and the Seychelles also made the list.

The issue's cover image, featuring a waterfall inGoiás, Brazil, was photographed by Victor Lima, a Brazilian amateur photographer. He submitted the photo as part of an assignment on ,and it was chosen for the cover of the December 2015/January 2016 issue by Traveler editors out of more than 34,000 submissions.

“We are thrilled to be the first major magazine to publish a reader photo as our cover image, especially one shot by an amateur photographer who bought his first camera just a year ago,” said editor-in-chief Zachowitz.
