The Musashi, a World War II Japanese battleship, was sunk by American forces on October 24, 1944. One of the world’s largest and most technologically advanced battleships was never seen again — until this week, according to a press release from Paul G. Allen, leader of the .
Allen, better known as the co-founder of Microsoft, and his team used historical records, topographical data and advanced technology aboard his yacht to discover the wreckage. The ship was found at the bottom of the Sibuyan Sea off the Philippines on March 1.
The crew had been searching for the missing ship for more than eight years.
“Since my youth, I have been fascinated with World War II history, inspired by my father’s service in the U.S. Army,” Allen said. “The Musashi is truly an engineering marvel and, as an engineer at heart, I have a deep appreciation for the technology and effort that went into its construction. I am honored to play a part in finding this key vessel in naval history and honoring the memory of the incredible bravery of the men who served aboard her.”
