Jan 17, 2024 3:31 PM

At least 70 vehicles were involved in a pileup Wednesday morning along Interstate 95 between Newport and Bangor, Maine, in snowy conditions from Winter Storm Quantum.

Seventeen people were injured, some seriously, state police spokesman Steve McCausland told the Associated Press, but there were no fatalities.

A school bus, a tractor trailer and several cars were involved in the accident which occurred at about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday morning, police said. None of the children on the bus were injured. At least 50 of the vehicles were in such bad shape, they had to be towed away.

Emergency personnel climbed on top of cars to reach motorists stuck in the middle of the chaotic mass of vehicles. McCausland said a veteran trooper described the site as a "giant pile of metal."

The northbound lanes on the 30-mile stretch of highway near Etna were closed for 5 hours in what was the worst pileup the area had seen in more than 15 years, police said.

Snow showers continued in the area throughout the day.
