New Englanders who were awake early Tuesday morning saw a rare treat: a meteor streaking across the sky.
The fireball was documented by dash cams and surveillance videos in several states at about 1 a.m. Tuesday. It lit up the sky for a few seconds before disappearing. Residents in Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts reported sightings.
Mount Washington Observatory officials told WMUR.com that the meteor lit up the sky across New England– everywhere except the observatory itself, which was shrouded by fog and unable to document the fireball's entry into the atmosphere.

According to the American Meteor Society, the meteor was seen as far south as New Jersey and as far north as Canada.
Although the fireball was a beautiful display in the sky, it's not believed that the piece of space debris made significantcontact with the Earth at the end of its journey, which gave some officials a chance to take a lighthearted approach to the event.
"Let's hope the visitors are friendly," the Portland, Maine, Police Department joked on Facebook. "They could just be some of Stephen King's friends on their way to visit him. Whom ever they are I'm sure we could win them over with a whoopie pie."
