Large Black Mats Are Covering One Florida Beach

Black mats known as Mobi-Mats have been seen on several beaches in Flagler County, Florida.The mats are meant to protect newly fortified dunes.They also allow easier beach assess for people of all abilities, including those in wheelchairs.

Visitors to oneFlorida beach may be surprised when they see large black mats strewn across the sand.

Mobi-Mats have been installed at nine beaches in Flagler County to help protect the recently fortified dunes and allow easier beach access for people of all abilities, , according to a Facebook post.

“We still have to install mats in two areas,” said general services director Heidi Petito. “We should be finished at Jungle Hut Road today, and then the last of the residential streets.”

Five-foot-wide, nonslip, semi-rigid were installed for foot traffic, along with bigger mats capable of supporting larger vehicles and trailers. The mats are made ofa 100 percent recycled polyester, according to the company website.

The government office suggests beachgoers wear shoes while walking on the mats because they can be "uncomfortable."

Earlier this week, 5.6 miles of dunes were fortified at the beach and300,000 sea oats were planted.

“The completed dunes work looks excellent,” said Commission Chair Greg Hansen. “Staff has done a wonderful job keeping all of the moving parts that make up this project on target.”
