With snow-capped peaks, ancient temples and rocky coastline, , and for over 30 years, renowned photographer Michael Kenna has been capturing their quiet, poetic beauty in stunning black-and-white images.
These images have been collected in Kenna's new book "" (Prestel Publishing, 2015), which features 240 black-and-white images of Japan, taken across the country in such places as Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu, Okinawa, and Shikoku.
Depicting such quietly evocative scenes as a solar eclipse over Tokyo, Misty Mount Fuji, a tilted tree over Kussharo Lake and a Torri gate emerging from moving clouds and water, the collection of photographs in the book has been organized into five chapters: "Sea," "Trees," "Spirit," and "Sky."
The book was designed by , and the images, some new and some already well-known, have often been paired with classic haiku poems.
Based in Seattle, Kenna is originally from England. His work has appeared in galleries and museums around the world, including in the collections of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
