When designer and filmmaker Alex Cornell went on a trip to Antarctica, it was an overwhelming experience.

The rare sight of a flipped iceberg caught by Cornell's lens didn't strike the photographer until later.

"I think the funny thing was seeing this specific iceberg at the time wasn’t any more astounding than looking at the place itself," Cornell told weather.com.

It wasn't until the glacial scientist onboard the same ship reacted to the sight that Alex and others on the trip understood.

"We got some sense as to how unusual this was," Cornell said.

Cornell shot the photos at Cierva Cove on the Antarctic Peninsula last December on an expedition through the Drake Passage.

Although much of his career now includes shooting film and producing videos, Cornell doesn't consider himself an expert photographer. In this case, the subject spoke loudly for itself.

With a fascination for capturing extreme environments, Cornell had and now plans on a trip to gather footage underwater near Hawaii.

You can find more of Cornell's work .
