Dominion Power has accepted responsibility for spilling 13,500 gallons of mineral oil into the Potomac River last month and will pay for the cleanup, the company recently announced.

The spill in one area of the river near Reagan National Airport, according to WTOP.com. Officials performed days of tests and determined the Jan. 24 spill , the Washington Post reported.

“Now that we’ve had the opportunity to look at the data the Coast Guard collected, we concur with their findings and accept responsibility for the spill,” Dominion spokesperson Chuck Penn told the Post.

The spill was especially damaging to the immediate area around the substation because the oil leaked into the Roaches Run Waterfowl Sanctuary, an area where many wild birds live. According to NBC Washington, 21 wild geese and ducks from the sanctuary , and 32 were rescued and cleaned up. Most of the birds that died were Canada Geese, wildlife officials told the Post.

Coast Guard Petty Officer David Marin told the Post that Dominion will likely be liable for the cleanup cost and may also be fined for damages to the ecosystem.

Dominion said more than 95 percent of the spilled mineral oil has been recovered, WTOP.com also reported.
