Diver Takes Selfie Among Millions of Jellyfish (PHOTOS)
Jan 17, 2024 3:41 PM

Photographer Nadia Aly captured the stunning shots above while swimming in the aptly-named Jellyfish Lake-including aselfie(or a jell-fie … if you will).

The lake, located onEilMalkisland in the Pacific country ofPalau, is home to more than ten million jellyfish, according to Fish 'n Fins.

Aly, of Seattle, told Caters News Agency she spent more than eight hours swimming in the water, snapping thousands of photos.

“Once I found them, I was overwhelmed with the shear amount of jellyfish that were around me,” Aly explained. “I was nervous, as I didn't want to kill any with the movement of my fins as they are literally all around you.”

National Geographic reports that the jellyfish migrate from west to east every morning to follow the sun, which they need to make the algae in their bodies grow. Later in the day, they migrate back to the western side of the lake, where they remain during the night.

"As I swam into the middle of the lake, I didn't know where to find these jellies - I saw them spaced but not accumulated all together,” Aly told Caters. “There was nobody else in the lake, so I followed the sun as I knew the jellies follow the sun across the lake throughout the day.”

Technically, scuba diving is not allowed in the lake because the oxygen gas can be harmful to the jellyfish. For tourists who want to get up close and personal with these orange-sized jellyfish, there are plenty of tour groups that provide the appropriate snorkeling gear. But Aly advises you also check the weather first.

“The time of day and location of the sun are the two factors that really make or break the shoot,” Aly explained. “As you can see in the pictures, the sun really makes some of the shots that much more beautiful."
