Adventure photographer Chris Burkard has traveled all around the world capturing people interacting with beautiful landscapes in some of the world’s most remote regions.
“I love venturing to remote untouched places around the globe, but also want to add the human element into these locations,” Burkard said about his love of adventure photography. “My inspiration is to capture each natural wonder as purely as possible and show them off in a way that inspires people.”
The Pismo Beach, Calif. native originally started pursuing art, but quickly changed his mind after exploring photography. “Once I picked up a camera I knew this was the medium that I could best express myself.”
He also realized that pursuing photography would allow him to explore the world. “Growing up I wasn’t able to travel outside of local destinations and always had the urge to travel the globe,” he said. “Once I landed my first surf trip in 2004 to Dubai I had hardly any idea what I was in for, but I was instantly hooked, and knew this is what I wanted to do as a career.”

When Burkard is preparing to go on a shoot he gets “the lay of the land” the day before and also checks the weather.
“Once I am out in the field it's my goal to first circumnavigate my subject and look for every angle. It's my goal to shoot it in every way possible, with every focal length and find the sweet spot of competition for the scene,” he explained.
After he captures the landscape, he then introduces the human element of his photo. He shoots all locations at sunrise, sunset and at night to capture the scene in a unique light.
“Weather always throws a spin on a shoot, sometimes it’s good and sometimes it is less than ideal,” said Burkard.
Burkard spent a month suffering through below-freezing temperatures in the Arctic and never saw the sky. “It can get a bit demoralizing when you are in the most beautiful place in the world, but the weather keeps you from experiencing it in a full way.”
On the other hand, the tough weather sometimes pays off, according to Burkard.
“I took a trip to Banff National Park and got a perfect light dusting of snow on the mountains just before I arrived, so everything was pristine and perfectly picturesque. It’s the one thing I can’t control, and I respect it because of that.”
One of Burkard’s most memorable shots was captured on a trip to the Aleutian Islands, where there were no roads to the ocean so members of his team all traveled by ATV to get from the village to the coast.
“As we crested the final hill we were treated not only with a view of the distant snow-covered volcano, but a point with waves peeling down its right side. It was a moment I had hoped for, but didn't expect to see. Clean waves and a clear day in place known as the 'cradle of storms.' The distant volcanoes and cliffside made [surfer] Josh Mulcoy seem like just a speck within the vast Alaskan wilderness.”
That stunning image became the cover of Surf magazine. To see more of Burkard’s work visit his and page.
