The United States currently holds the top spot in the world when it comes to cumulative greenhouse gas emissions dating back to 1990. However, a says that two experts are projecting that China will takeover this undesired top spot in 2015 or 2016.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the last couple of years. That economic growth has fueled the increasing cumulative greenhouse gas emissions since 1990, which according to Reuters is the benchmark year for U.N.-led action on climate change.

Glen Peters of theCenter for International Climate and Environmental Research, Oslo (CICERO) told Reuters, "A few years ago China's per capita emissions were low, its historical responsibility was low. That's changing fast."

India, which is another rapidly-developing nation, , according to CICERO. This would be right behind China, the United States and the European Union.

The United States and China have agreed to a climate deal that calls for drastic improvements to both countries' pollution habits in coming years.

Under the deal, the U.S. will cut emissions by 26 to 28 percent, compared to 2005's levels, by 2025.

Unofficially China has pledged a 2030 emissions cap, a 2020 coal cap and that it would increase its use of non-fossil fuel energy.
