Once ready, U.K. engineers will outfit electric vehicles with a wireless device that communicates with equipment installed beneath the road for charging.

Forbes reports that the tests are to offer more options to drivers with electric vehicles. These include installing plug-in charging stations every 20 miles on the nation's highways.

In a statement, U.K. Transport Minister Andrew Jones said and stay dedicated to keeping Britain at the forefront of green technology.

“The off-road trials of wireless power technology will help to create a more sustainable road network for England and open up new opportunities for businesses that transport goods across the country,” said Chief Highways Engineer Mike Wilson in the statement.

The British government will test the technology for 18 months before deciding whether or not to extend tests to actual roads.
