Villarrica, one of Chile's most active volcanoes, looks a little different after a violent eruption on March 3, 2015.
NASA photographs taken only days prior to the eruption show a beautiful slope covered in white. The unsullied glaciers appear in both a satellite image and an image taken on the ground. Both photographs were taken on February 22, 2015.
However, the same photographs look very different after they were replicated on March 5, 2015 — two days after the eruption. In both the satellite and ground photos, the east side of the Pucón volcano is now covered in volcanic ash.
"Activity at , made evident by a rise in seismicity, crater incandescence, and explosions," according to reports from Chile’s National Geology and Mining Service and NASA.
