A home built for a retired pilot in Duchess County, New York, was designed to feel free and open, almost floating through the air.

The Aviator's Villa has a pool to the south and a lake to the north, creating the illusion of being surrounded by water.

"Similarly to how a plane would steer and point through currents ... the house turns and torques to face both the sky, the surrounding views and the waters," explains Carlo Enzo, the principal architect with Urban Office Architecture.

The kitchen, bedrooms and main living areas have 30- and 40-foot high ceilings. The large windows that wrap around the home allow the house to soak up abundant natural light, as well as incredible views of the lake and the rolling hills around it.

"The architecture is thus imagined as a floating piece between two water bodies and fully surrounded by air," Enzo says.
