The 1-bedroom, 2-bedroom Mushroom Dome Cabin is Airbnb's most popular rental. (airbnb)
Nestled on 10 acres of land in the middle of the woods in Aptos, California, this tiny home looks more like a treehouse. It's called the Mushroom Dome Cabin, and of all the 2 million-plus properties on Airbnb, this one is the most popular.
It's so desired that it books up for the summer as many as 6 months in advance, according to owners Kitty and Michael on the rental's Airbnb page.
With two beds, a futon, one bathroom and a small kitchen, the geodesic Mushroom Dome Cabin is the perfect amount of space for two or three people. A deck offers spectacular views of redwood trees.
"A lot of people have fantasies about staying in a dome," Kitty Mrache, one of the property's owners, told NBC News. "A geodesic dome has this unique quality where you can whisper on one side of it and the sound can travel to the other side."
It's a cozy retreat in the forest, and sustainable, too. Because it's so small, it uses up very little energy; the house is outfitted with a composting toilet, too.

For $115 a night, guests can get a feel of the tiny house movement. That's a major part of the property's appeal for travelers.
Then, of course, there's the immersion in nature. The owners also have goats and chickens, and they boast regular hummingbird sightings at the feeder on the cabin's deck.
According to the Daily Mail, Mrache assembled the tiny home out of a DIY kit in 2009 and listed on Airbnb soon after.
“Almost immediately, we began getting reservations,” Mrache told The Guardian.
It's been a hot pick on Airbnb ever since.
