Weather.com has partnered with the photo community to showcase inspiring photography that truly shows that “It’s Amazing Out There.”
Our first featured photographer is Evgeny Tchebotarev, one of the founders of , who recently returned from a tour of Patagonia, capturing the region’s breathtaking mountains in incredible light.
In order to capture the sun hitting the mountains in Torres Del Paine National Park in Chile, Tchebotarev and his friends had to wake up before the crack of dawn to capture the once-in-a-lifetime shots.
“The sunrise at this time happens around 5 a.m., so you have to be on the spot no later than 4:30 a.m. That’s the hardest part -- to get yourself out of the bed, dress up and brace the bitter cold and wind, get out of the hotel room,” he said. “If you manage to do that, you are 80 percent there. The rest is nature’s work. Some days you just get clouds, and the mountains are totally hidden.”
Tchebotarev had never been to Patagonia before his trip, but has always been fascinated by seeing other photographer’s photos of the mountains on . It was seeing these shots that inspired him and his friend to do a photo tour.
“For me, as a landscape photographer, the weather makes the shot,” he said. So, in Patagonia he was on the hunt to capture something remarkable. “It’s when the weather changes that you can capture something unique, something that makes the shot worthwhile. And, of course, being there for sunrise and sunset is important -- rarely can you capture something that’s worth showing in a noon of a sunny day.”
He jokes that his vacations are very different than most people’s typical vacations because of his pursuit of interesting weather for photos. “My vacation is bitter cold, windy, snowy, with early wake up calls and long drives or hikes in pitch-black darkness of the night. And I will take that over being on a beach every single day.”
Tchebotarev, originally from Moscow, moved to Toronto with his family when he was 16. It wasn’t until two years later that he really got into photography, and after three photos from his first roll of film, at age 18, were published in a magazine, he was hooked.
“It motivated me to pursue my passion, despite spending years in the university studying economics and finance,” he explained.
Tchebotarev founded along with Oleg Gutsol as a hobby in 2004. “I wanted to share my photos and invited other photographers to share theirs. It was a fairly new world of digital photography, and so a lot of people have been discovering or rediscovering photography as their pastime. The goal was to get the best photographers together and help them gain more exposure. A lot of things have changed since then - the team grew from 2 to 60 people, and from just a few photographers to over 5 million, but the same concept remains to this day -- is home to everyone’s best photos, helping discover new places and new talents.”
Last year the company launched , their commercial imaging marketplace, to open up the world's best images to brands and agencies who seek authentic and creative images to represent them.
