Keep Your Money Safe on Vacation
Nov 23, 2024 6:21 PM

There are few things more certain to ruin a holiday or business trip than losing your bankroll. Here are six common-sense things you can do to avoid a money misfortune.

Carry only as much money as you need for the day. Leave the rest in a hotel safe or another secure place. If you need to carry large amounts of money, ask your partner or a friend to carry some of it for you. The likelihood that misfortunes will strike both of you is far less.Use a money belt or secure inside pocket. Look for a money belt that can be worn comfortably for long periods of time, and can be accessed easily and inconspicuously. If you are using an inside pocket, the opening should close securely.Don't exchange money at the airport. Most travelers are surprised to learn that the worst currency conversion rates are often at the airport counters; also, this is often where hustlers hang around looking for unsuspecting travelers. When paying for something, especially out in the open or in a marketplace, always pay from a small stash of cash you keep in a front pocket; never remove a large amount of cash for others to see. When in a foreign country, never convert money with someone who approaches you on the street or trade on the black market. To avoid being swindled, always use a reputable currency exchange in a bank or hotel.
